When designing their cities, the Greeks included an area for healing and named it after their god of healing -- Aesclepius. Healings performed in these centers were unique in that the Greeks understood that all healing was spiritual, and as such, all healing took place in one's dreams. For this, each healing center had caves or 'Abatons' in which healees would spend the night receiving their healing. Today all the sites of ancient Greek cities have 'aesclepion' locations.
Prior to the Greek healing centers, all healers would travel from community to community offering their services. Hence these Greek Healing Centers are considered to be the first centralized locations for healings -- the first "hospitals".
Today if you look at the symbol of the American Medical Association (AMA), on the graduation certificates of all doctors, you will see the caduseus -- the symbol used by the Greeks to signify their healing centers.
The Aesclepion Healing Center in San Rafael shares only the belief that all healing begins with healing of the Spirit, and then Spirit heals the Body.
